David Lewis has been a consultant to Child & Child since May 2010.
He began his career in local government, where he built up his understanding of construction contracts and participated in the work of the Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT), serving on its management contracting working party. In 1990 he joined the construction group of a central London law firm, developing his experience in the commercial side of construction law and working with property solicitors on agreements for sale and lease, and funding and development agreements.
In 2001 he started his own legal practice, serving developers, colleges, construction companies, specialist contractors, construction professionals, homeowners, law firms, and many other businesses and individuals. In 2009 he sold his firm to begin a third legal career as a consultant.
David is a member of the Society of Construction Law. His article on Investigating the JCT Standard Forms of Agreement for Collateral Warranty was cited with approval by two Law Lords in the House of Lords case Alfred McAlpine Construction Ltd v Panatown Ltd. His paper on The Consensus Principle and the Interpretation of Construction Contracts by the Courts was a commended entry in the Hudson Prize Competition.
